No explanation at all in the guide what the other two greyed out check boxes 'outside edges only' and 'invert' are supposed to do in the tool palette (But I think I know what they mean). So what is going on here? I haven't figured that one out yet. When I try the increase on the bottom edge, nothing happens at all. If I uncheck that, and click on the left side setting box arrow to increase, the text jumps a little as soon as it goes to 1pt, when I keep clicking, nothing happens. There is a check box to 'restrict to picture box' and that suppresses picture content to the box boundaries. Enter values in the Top, Left, Bottom, and Right fields toĭetermine the outset or inset of the text from the picture's boundaries. This includes any white background areas saved with your Choose Picture Bounds to run text around the rectangular "canvas area" of the.I assumed that this should then apply to all the edges of a picture, right? Well, wrong it seems. And to boot, there is only one setting box for the amount of runaround. There is also a checkbox for 'Outside edges only'. Choose Auto Image to create a Bézier clipping and runaround path based on the picture's non-white areas. Why? Because I have tried to change the settings in the tool palette for a box that sits above the text to every setting available in the drop down box, but the text is not changing. Perhaps I should have said that the runaround feature is almost non-existent. I don't really want to come here for silly questions that I should be able to figure out by reading a well written and thoroughly detailed guide. ![]() ![]() Now I am trying to get back into QXP but it proves to be pretty tough because it is not as intuitive as ID is for many things in the design process. Last year I decided that I am not going to be forced into subscriptions by Adobe no matter what. Then came along ID and I made the switch to ID V3 despite a few features missing because it was infinitely more user friendly and intuitive for design focused people, yet was also very stable with large documents and multi user book files. I used it to the max and was very fast at it. then came QXP 4 and was the standard for quite some time. I have started with QXP 3 many years ago. But even with all the issues you think there are in Q, Jiri, I'll still opt to use Q whenever it is my call to make.Īnd thanks for the replies. I make decent money in both ID/Q and am as efficient in one and the other. Which is the reason for bouncing between these layout applications. Which layout application I choose to use (I use 2 very frequently and another infrequently) is often not my call. And I can accept some things cannot be done at all in one or the other. I can accept that there are different means of accomplishing similar/same things. Sometimes I'll work in one for several days or a few weeks and hardly touch the other. I switch between ID and Q sometimes several times a day, depending upon what's going on here. ![]() Kinda like the old Pogo cartoon that said "We have met the enemy and he is us." That also applies in the other direction. I remember that Adobe and several authors spent a good amount of time on the forums and in print exhorting the person new to ID to set aside their "Quark" mentality if they were ever to make the most out of InDesign. I think that for a person new to Q, there are more mental issues to overcome than practical problems to solve. I don't necessarily agree with the conclusion, but I do agree that Q needs to not only continue adding new features but also work on work-flow issues and flesh out functions that have long existed but could be enhanced. ![]() Sorry for the rant, but having decided to ditch ID is really a damn hard decision already, and to find that navigating around the tools is so counter intuitive at times. It just doesn't make sense to have to hunt all over the place to find settings and different context aware tools. So, I am confused again with the whole way things work in QXP. But that also says it only applies to text being above and image box. Now, I have read the guide, and it says you can also set runaround while in the text box with the text editing tool. I tried the drop down menu and set this to Auto Image, but when i try to increase the setting there, the text does not respond to that input. The only way I found to do this is to use the runaround tab in the tool palette, and there you have no option to simply set a runaround for basic rectangle picture box with equal distance to all four sides. I am trying to set a picture box runaround in a single setting for all four sides.

![]() The Airflow was the right car at the wrong time, but the right time would never come. This original 1934 factory film explores the ground-breaking engineering that produced the fascinating but doomed Chrysler Airflow. Look at the Airflow and try to think of any year between 19 in which the car’s unusual styling would have been embraced by car buyers. This has led to the idea, repeated endlessly through the years, that the Airflow was “too far ahead of its time” to be a sales success, which isn’t really true. Car buyers just couldn’t warm themselves to the aerodynamic styling and unfamiliar proportions. While the Chrysler Airflow (and its De Soto counterpart) was an impressive engineering achievement, it was a massive failure in the showrooms. (See our feature on GM’s all-steel Turret Top here.) This curious anachronism was more or less forced on the automakers until the steel companies developed rolling mills that could produce sheet of sufficient width to cover an entire roof stamping. Like virtually all closed cars up to that point, the original Airflow used a composite wood-and-fabric roof insert. The illustration above also debunks another popular Airflow myth, that the body was a pioneer of all-steel construction. (See our feature on the ’36 Zephyr here.) Some Chrysler materials stated that the Airflow body was of unit construction, a more technically precise description. (There were numerous manufacturing problems that damaged both production volume and the car’s reputation.) The 1936 Lincoln Zephyr was of similar partial-unit construction, but with the body welded to the chassis. Jan Norbye, in his 1984 book, Car Design Structure and Architecture, wrote that Chrysler engineering guru Carl Breer originally wanted to weld the body assembly to the ladder frame, but production line problems arose so threaded fasteners were substituted. So no, the Airflow wasn’t unit construction in any real or modern sense. And the Airflow body shown below was also attached to a separate and conventional ladder-type chassis frame in the same way, using 14 to 20 bolts depending on body style. It’s the typical body-on-frame construction as used by the Detroit automakers for decades (and still used on pickups). The illustration below (from the Airflow body service manual) provides a more realistic view of the body construction. ![]() However, the illustrations suggest that the Airflow employed unit body/frame construction or even a space frame, which is not really the case. (Even in the early ’30s, wooden inner body components were still commonplace.) Chrysler claimed that this new construction was 40 percent stronger than conventional car bodies, and of that there is little doubt. ![]() Numerous illustrations like the one above were produced by Chrysler to show the reinforced-steel body construction, in which metal stampings replaced the traditional hardwood braces used in car bodies since the industry began. The Airflow has become the stuff of myths and legends, and here are a few of them. (Watch the 1934 Chrysler engineering film, Fashioned for Function, here.) It’s hardly surprising that such an unconventional car would generate a considerable buzz around it, and the buzz persists to this day. But while the engineering may have been unfamiliar, it was totally sound. And the packaging seemed outlandish as well, with the engine shoved far forward in the chassis and the passengers nestled within the wheelbase. ![]() The Airflow’s radical styling was designed to reduce aerodynamic drag rather than to please the eye. When the Chrysler Airflow was officially introduced in January of 1934, it was quite a shock to the American car-buying public. However, a few of the stories aren’t quite accurate. When the Chrysler Airflow appeared in 1934, it was so controversial that enthusiasts are still talking about it today. ![]() The Reliable Hardware Company Chest Handles are an example of just how diverse your choices are.
